Dental braces
Dental braces exist in different types and they comprise metal braces, clear braces, and

Metal Braces
Also known as traditional braces are commonly used by kids for its affordability. They are metal brackets that are applied to your teeth, and the metal wire which is threaded on the brackets is meant to exert pressure on the teeth and finally move them.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are applied on the inner side of the teeth and work similarly to metal braces. Unlike metal braces that use small elastic bands to keep the metal wire in place and they aren’t visible from the outside unless patient opens his/her mouth. If you have an extreme orthodontic issue, it might not be an ideal treatment for you.
Self-Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces use a built-in system. Thus they are easier to clean and require fewer visits to the orthodontist. With this type of brace, the bracket and wire system is significantly functional. Concretely, they are widely used by the experts today; contrary to the conventional method. Besides, they are not as painful as other types.
Headgear
Headgear is still used as an orthodontic treatment for some moderate-to-severe conditions, although it’s becoming rare. Orthodontic headgear works to correct malocclusion and teeth misalignment effectively in children, and is still in use.
Retainers
Retainers are pieces of plastic or metal that are custom-made for each person and usually used during the final process of treatment; it can either be fixed or removable.
They’re made to match the shape of your mouth and the alignment of your teeth and no two retainers are the same. When incorporated, this treatment holds the teeth while the gum and bones are moved to a new spot. You can permanently straighten your teeth if you consistently wear a retainer for the better part of your lifetime.
There are two general kinds of retainers:
- Fixed. These are made of thin, custom-fitted wire that is bonded to the tongue-side of your child’s upper or lower teeth.
- Removable. These can be put in and taken out daily by your child. They can be wire retainers (made of wire and a plastic-like material) or clear retainers (transparent trays made of a plastic-like material).
How Do I Know
if I Need Orthodontic Treatment?
Here are some problems with your teeth that may require orthodontics:
Overbite – In this case, the upper front teeth appear to stick out over the lower teeth.
Underbite – Here, the lower teeth may appear too far forward, while the upper teeth are set too far back.
Crossbite – You know you have a crossbite when your upper teeth fit behind your lower teeth when your mouth is closed.
Open bite – Some people have a vertical gap between the front lower and upper teeth when biting down. This is called an open bite.
Misplaced midline – Here, the center of your upper and lower front teeth don’t line up.
Spacing – In this case, your teeth don’t seem to fill up your mouth. There appear to be random gaps or spaces between teeth.
Crowding – This is what happens when the dental ridge in your mouth doesn’t have room for all your teeth.
